How Star Wars changed my life

by rodney on May 4, 2014

darth-vaderYesterday was May 4th, now known as Star Wars Day (May the 4th be with you). In honour of Star Wars Day, I thought it was time I shared with you how important Star Wars has been for me in helping change my life.

Before I do, I want to take you back over 15 years ago. I was 16 years old and full of anger and fear. In particular, I had a lot of anger and hate towards my Dad, whom at the time I was estranged from. It was during this time that I made the connection between myself and Luke Skywalker, who was experiencing the same sort of issues as me. With this realisation, I went along the same journey and applied lessons learned from Star Wars to my own life.

I’m happy to say that I eventually made peace with my Dad as Luke did with his and live a life where I help teach and empower others with these emotional issues (I like to think of myself these days as more like Yoda than Luke!)

I could talk all day on what I’ve learned from Star Wars, but in the interest of time, I’d like to share the 3 important lessons that are relevant to everyone.

The Dark side is a choice

My dad experienced a lot pain during his life, especially in his childhood. This resulted in him giving into his own dark side and it became apparent that the same thing could easily happen to me, just as Luke realised. What I learned from Star Wars is that the dark side is a choice, you choose whether to not succumb to the dark side or you decide to do nothing. Either way, it is your choice. Many people spend their lives blaming others for what’s happened, but it gets them nowhere. Luke decided not to go to the dark side and so did I.

Self-belief can make anything happen

The best scene from Star Wars (in fact one of the best scenes from movie history) is when Luke is training with Yoda. Luke tries to use the force to get his ship out of the swamp because it is “too big”. When Yoda does it with ease, Luke doesn’t believe it, which is why he failed. What this scene taught me is the power of self-belief. If you believe in yourself and if you back yourself, you can make anything happen. Things that you though were impossible suddenly become possible if you have belief in yourself.

Do or do not, there is no try

Finally, this quote from Yoda has stuck with me since I was 16. This is what life comes down to, you either do, or do not. If you have issues you need to resolve or things you want to achieve, you have to take action. You have to do. You can also choose to do not, but remember if you do not, nothing will happen. Too often we use the word try when want to convince ourselves and others that we are taking action but really not believing it will work. Trying is having the intention to fail. When we try, we really put in a half assed effort that is doomed to fail. So either do and keep doing until you succeed or do not.

These are some of the lessons I use to live my life. It doesn’t matter either that it has come from movies, the point is I have taken them to make some massive improvements in my life. I hope they can also help you. May the 4th be with you!
