Why the Biggest Loser is setting you up to fail part 2

by rodney on March 27, 2013

In part 1, we looked at why the Biggest Loser is setting you up to fail in regards to making life changes.  Making life changes takes time and it takes planning.

We also looked at the 4 things you need to do so that you can create an effective plan, Identify the changes you want to make and why you want to make them, Identify what’s holding you back,  Educate yourself and finally Identify small action steps that milestones,

However, making a plan is only half the battle. If you want to make lasting changes in your life you also need to take action. This is where the work comes in.

However, this is also where most people fail. They start out motivated, however, they eventually become discouraged when results don’t happen as fast as they anticipate and become demotivated, unconfident and eventually give up.

In this part, we’ll look at 4 strategies you can do help you stay motivated, stay accountable and break old habits, giving you the best chance of making lasting changes.

Seek the help you need.

You can’t do this alone. The big reason why people fail is that they try to. You wouldn’t try to climb Everest alone.  Identify who the people you need are, especially the people who will help you overcome your barriers. They could be Doctors, Nutritionists, Financial planners, trainers, teachers, mentors, counsellors, healers, and coaches- anybody that you need to help you achieve your goals. Also, don’t forget to include friends and family that will help to keep you motivated and accountable. Once you have identified them, approach them, tell them of your goals and ask them for help.

Do something different

Einstein once said, “The definition is doing the same thing over again and expecting a different result”.  It amazes me the amount of people who want to make changes but want to keep doing the things they have always done. The reason you are in the situation you identified that you want to change in part one is because of what you have always done. If you want a different result, you have to do something different.

Go out of your comfort zone

In order to make a change, we need to grow. Growth happens when we leave our comfort zone.  The reason why so many people don’t change is they are afraid to leave their comfort zone, which is understandable.  Leaving your comfort zone can be scary, it is uncertain and failure is a possibility. It is, by nature, uncomfortable.  However, the growth nessercary for change doesn’t happen in the comfort zone.  A funny thing happens however when you leave your comfort zone, you begin to adapt, you master the challenges outside your comfort zone and it expands. This is what growth is and it facilitates change.

Don’t give up

As you go along your journey, you experience highs and lows. It is natural to become demotivated, you’ll often feel like throwing in the towel. However, if you give up, you will not reach your goals. You have a chance of succeeding if you keep going. I know, this is easier said than done. One of my biggest hurdles has been staying motivated and not giving up. To overcome this, I regularly top up my motivation, read and reread my goals and celebrating the milestones, it’s amazing how those small successes can make a huge difference.

Making a change is not easy. If it was, everybody would do it.  If you want to make a change, it is going to be tough, it will take commitment. I believe, the tougher it is to make change, the more fulfilling it will be when you finally make it.
